The criteria in the Fair Credits Standard derive from a systematic analysis of real-world examples of ecosystem service payment schemes from the last 20 years involving over 50 countries. Our peer-reviewed study highlighted five inter-related themes relating to equity, justice and fairness:

  1. Rights-holders’ perceptions of equity and justice

  2. Land tenure and ownership

  3. Participation in decision-making

  4. Fairness in benefit distribution

  5. Monitoring and enforcement

These are described in more detail in our Assessment Guides. Examples of supporting evidence and advice on completing each stage in the document is provided.

Our Services

  • Summary Assessment

This is the review process for project summaries. It enables project designers to receive rapid feedback on a proposed or existing credit scheme. The process allows for a rapid escalation to full proposal or a resubmission if required.

  • Full Assessment

This is the review process for full proposals for schemes that are either proposed or active. It allows schemes to be approved and accredited or to be resubmitted no more than two times if the proposal fails on one or more criterion. Once accredited, projects are required to submit regular progress reports in order to maintain accreditation.
